Upper-Division Programs

Programs in our School of Health Professions, the School of Nursing, and the School of Social Welfare are upper division and require prerequisite coursework* prior to applying. First-year applicants must apply to a pre-major through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and transfer students with all prerequisites completed apply directly to the program.

* 57 credits of prerequisite coursework are required for the following programs:

  • Accelerated Baccalaureate Nursing
  • Basic Baccalaureate Nursing
  • Clinical Laboratory Sciences
  • Respiratory Care
  • Social Work

60 credits of coursework are required for the Registered Nurse Baccalaureate Program.

** The Accelerated Baccalaureate Program additionally requires a previous bachelor’s degree.

Nursing

Accelerated Baccalaureate Program

The 12-month Accelerated Baccalaureate Program is designed for students who have already completed a bachelor's degree, either at Stony Brook University or a comparable institution. The concentrated nursing curriculum applies principles from the sciences, art, and humanities to patient-centered nursing practice, and leads to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

Applicants must have earned either a bachelor's degree and earned a 2.8 GPA or higher in the required prerequisite courses.

Basic Baccalaureate Program

The Nursing Basic Baccalaureate program leads to the Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing and starts in the Fall semester. This program appeals most to those who have not completed an associate’s degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline. However, those who have completed a bachelor's degree can still apply!

Students must have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8, and a grade of C or higher in the required prerequisite courses.

The Nursing major applies principles from the sciences, arts, and humanities to patient-centered nursing practice. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

Registered Nursing to Baccalaureate Program

If you already completed an Associate’s degree in nursing, then the RN to Baccalaureate program is appropriate. The Registered Nursing to Baccalaureate program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Nursing and is centered around a curriculum of upper-division Nursing and Liberal Arts courses that are offered on a part-time asynchronous schedule, composed of two onsite days and 1 synchronous virtual day. The curriculum applies theoretical models of nursing to real-world clinical scenarios. Admission requirements include: 

  • A current unencumbered New York State RN license(Or new graduate nurses who will be licensed within 6 months of the start of the program)
  • Minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5
  • All prerequisite coursework must be completed with a grade of C or higher

Respiratory Care

In our Respiratory Care Program, you'll develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become an outstanding patient care provider. Utilizing the standards established by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC), the established curriculum emphasizes quality care and the improvement of overall community health.

This program's multi-competent education and over 1000 hours of clinical experience will provide you with the techniques, professionalism, and hands-on experience that will help you begin your career in the respiratory therapy field.

Applicants must have earned either a bachelor's degree and earned a 2.8 GPA or higher in the required prerequisite courses.

Respiratory Care includes the following areas of study:

  • Neonatal/Pediatric Care

Social Work

Our undergraduate program in Social Work is designed to prepare you for the rapidly growing and changing job opportunities in the health and social welfare field. Our program includes field placements two days a week in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, youth services, and a wide variety of social welfare organizations.

Clinical Laboratory Sciences

Clinical Laboratory Sciences is an upper-division major leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. The program has NAACLS Accreditation, a low student-to-faculty ratio, and an excellent employment rate for graduates. You'll learn how to perform laboratory tests that confirm diagnoses, rule out suspected conditions, and monitor treatment to ensure that patients receive appropriate medication and therapy.

Summer 2025 Entry Term

State University of New York (SUNY) policy prohibits Stony Brook University admission applications from inquiring into an applicant’s prior criminal history. After acceptance, the College shall inquire if the student previously has been convicted of a felony if such individual seeks campus housing or participation in clinical or field experiences, internships (where a criminal history background check is required) or study abroad programs. The information required to be disclosed under SUNY policy regarding such felony convictions shall be reviewed by a standing campus committee consistent with the legal standards articulated in New York State Corrections Law, and other applicable law.

Students who have previously been convicted of a felony are advised that their prior criminal history may impede their ability to complete the requirements of certain academic programs and/or to meet licensure requirements for certain professions. Students who have concerns about such matters are advised to contact the dean's office of their intended academic program.
