What We Look for in a Nursing Applicant

Interested in Getting Your Bachelor of Science in Nursing?

Stony Brook University’s School of Nursing upper division undergraduate programs offer multiple paths that lead to a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. These upper division programs include the Accelerated Baccalaureate, Basic Baccalaureate, and RN to Baccalaureate programs. Each program is designed for people with different educational backgrounds. All of these programs require specific prerequisite coursework, particularly in the sciences.

Which program is right for you?

Pre-Nursing for First Year Applicants

First-year applicants who have not taken any college courses after graduating high school are considered for admission to the College of Arts and Sciences, where students are offered the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses prior to applying to the nursing major at the end of their second year. This is not a direct admission program, but does provide all the prerequisite requirements needed to apply to the Basic Baccalaureate Program.

Difference between the Basic Baccalaureate Program (BBP) and Accelerated Baccalaureate Program (ABP)

If you already completed or will be completing a Bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline, either the Accelerated Baccalaureate Program (ABP) or the Basic Baccalaureate Program (BBP) would be appropriate.

  • The ABP program condenses the entire curriculum into 12 months. It is important to note, that it is a requirement students in the Accelerated Program cannot work while in this program. This program requires a Bachelor's degree to be completed by the start of the program.
  • The BBP program completes the nursing curriculum in 2 years with a summer break in between. Students may be able to work part-time while in the BBP program. A Bachelor's degree is not required.

Accelerated Baccalaureate Program (ABP)

If you have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline, the Accelerated Baccalaureate program is an option. This program requires intensive, accelerated study, therefore it is important to note that students cannot work while in the program.

Upon graduating, you will earn a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing and will be eligible to take the NCLEX - RN exam for licensure.

Students accepted to the program will start in the summer term.

Basic Baccalaureate Program (BBP)

If you have not completed an Associate’s degree in nursing or a Bachelor’s degree in a non-nursing discipline, the Basic Baccalaureate program is appropriate. Students without a previous Bachelor’s degree are required to complete 2 years of prerequisite general education coursework that will be applied to the degree.

Upon graduating, you will earn a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing and will be eligible to take the NCLEX - RN exam for licensure.

Students accepted to the program will start in the fall term.

RN to Bachelors of Science in Nursing program

If you already completed an Associate’s degree in nursing, then the RN to Baccalaureate program is appropriate.

Students accepted to the program will start in the fall term.
