Get to know the Stony Brook University students shaping the future of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Ruoyan Fan ('29)

Ruoyan, a PhD student in Electrical Engineering, was selected for the Top 5 Best Paper Award in the prestigious 2025 CIGRE Next Generation Network (NGN) Paper Competition–an honor that recognizes the most promising young researchers in power engineering worldwide. Ruoyan’s research, supported by her peers and fellow PhD students–Zimin Jiang, Khezr Sanjani, and Kamini Shahare–earned her the opportunity to represent Stony Brook University at the Grid of the Future Conference in Denver, Colorado.

CIGRE is the world’s largest professional organization in power engineering, and this recognition places Ruoyan at the forefront of innovation in the field.

This is not an isolated achievement. Stony Brook students have consistently excelled in this prestigious competition. In the past three years alone, Dr. Qing Shen (Class of 2025), Dr. Dmitrii Etingov (Class of 2025), and Dr. Zefan Tang (Class of 2021, recipient of the Top 1 Award in 2024) have all been recognized for their groundbreaking research. These repeated successes demonstrate how our programs equip students with the knowledge, mentorship, and experience needed to achieve excellence on the global stage.

Ameem Khan ('26, '27)

Ameem’s journey at Stony Brook University demonstrates the transformative impact of mentorship, perseverance, and a supportive academic community. When Ameem began his C Programming Fundamentals course, he faced the challenge of learning programming from the ground up. Through the encouragement of his peers and his participation in the IEEE Professor Mixer, he connected with Professor Chen, whose mentorship helped him strengthen his programming foundation and build confidence in his abilities. 

With this support, Ameem was able to pursue new opportunities, including the Department of Energy’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program, gaining valuable research experience and further developing his skills.

After completing his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Engineering at Stony Brook, Ameem has decided to continue his academic journey as a master’s student, highlighting how Stony Brook prepares students for continued success in advanced studies and the engineering field. His experience reflects the university’s commitment to providing students with the mentorship, resources, and opportunities needed to grow into innovative engineers and future leaders.
