Educational Outreach Programs in Engineering
Welcome to Stony Brook University's Electrical Engineering Outreach Page! Our goal is to inspire the next generation of engineers by providing educational and hands-on lessons. The programs we offer include summer camps and boot camps that are designed to engage young and curious minds.
The department offers a range of programs that are tailored for elementary, middle, high schoolers, and even dedicated programs for K-12 teachers or school counselors. All offerings are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS).
Choose Your Program
Format: Remote, in-person, or hybrid (taught by graduate STEM students)
Activities:
- Circuit Explorers: build simple electrical circuits and learn how electricity works
- Robotics for Kids: explore beginner robotics using LEGO/WeDo platforms
- Eco-Engineers: design projects focused on sustainability and renewable energy
- Code Creators: learn programming through visual coding tools
Format: Remote, in-person, or hybrid (taught by graduate STEM students)
Focus Standards:
- Electric circuits and energy transfer through current
- Digital vs. analog signal reliability and data transmission
- Engineering design process (criteria, constraints, testing, and iteration)
Key Skills:
- Designing and evaluating engineering solutions
- Testing and improving models and prototypes
- Understanding environmental and real-world impacts of design choices
Format: Hands-on classroom engineering program (remote, in-person, or hybrid)
Focus Standards:
- Energy conversion and device design
- Ohm’s Law and circuit analysis
- Digital communication and wave-based technologies
- Engineering design for complex real-world problems
Key Skills:
- Breaking down and solving complex engineering challenges
- Evaluating trade-offs (cost, safety, reliability, impact)
- Designing, building, and refining technical solutions
Focus: Integrating engineering into science/STEM classrooms using NYSSLS-aligned practices.
Includes: Hands-on design challenges (i.e., building and testing simple machines, creating circuits and basic robotics), lesson ideas, and classroom strategies.
Outcome: Ready-to-use curriculum resources and methods to teach engineering concepts effectively, as well as a certificate of completion (30 professional development hours).
Focus: Engineering pathways, college admissions, and STEM career guidance.
Includes: Hands-on activities, labor market insights, scholarships, and advising resources.
Outcome: Tools and materials to better support students pursuing engineering and STEM fields.

Explorations in STEM
This program offers research experiences in STEM disciplines to undergraduate students
during the summer. The program is partially sponsored by PSEG.
What are the Next Generation Science Standards?
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are research-based K-12 science standards
that emphasize hands-on learning, inquiry, and problem solving. The students think
like scientists and engineers through three-dimensional learning-integrating scientific
practices, crosscutting concepts, and core disciplinary ideas.
