Leah Holbrook MS, RD

2019 Award for Excellence in Teaching with Technology in an Online Course

Leah Holbrook is a Registered Dietitian with a Master’s degree in Health Care Policy and Management from Stony Brook University. She is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Family, Population and Preventive Medicine at Stony Brook Medicine and Associate Director for the Graduate Nutrition Program. Prior to co-developing the fully online M.S. nutrition program, Holbrook coordinated The LI Center for Pediatric Obesity Prevention. She has been teaching online since 2009, developing and teaching courses in maternal and child nutrition, nutrition policy and student-led capstone projects. Since the inception of the graduate program in 2012, Holbrook has strived to keep on top of all of the useful tools available to ultimately provide students with the most effective and engaging experience possible.

Rebecca Garcia, PHD2019 Award for Excellence in Teaching with Technology in a Face-to-Face Course

After completing a B.S. in chemistry at Emory University, Rebecca Garcia earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  Her doctoral and post-doctoral work in the Brazil lab investigated how cells communicate using the slime mold Dictyostelium discoiduem as a model organism. Garcia held faculty positions within the CUNY and SUNY systems and Barnard College before joining the Undergraduate Biology Program at Stony Brook University in 2015.  She currently serves as lecturer for the Introductory Biology Laboratories, courses taken by over 2000 students each year. Skills such as reading scientific literature, using of laboratory instruments, designing experiments, and analyzing data are emphasized. Garcia utilizes a variety of technologies to enhance student learning including interactive tutorials designed to help students learn instrumentation, clickers, and Brightspace assessments.

Deborah Zelizer

2019 Outstanding Assessment AwardDeborah Zelizer

Deborah Zelizer is chair of the Department of Health Sciences and program director of the Health Science major in the School of Health Technology and Management at Stony Brook University. She is also an alumna of the School of Social Welfare where she received a master's degree in social work.

Prior to joining the Health Science major, Zelizer was involved in the field of HIV/AIDS for fifteen years. She began her work at the AIDS Inpatient Treatment Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center where she provided psychosocial support as well as extensive training to the staff regarding behavioral and social aspects of health. She has also held the position of senior educator for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute. In this capacity, Zelizer provided HIV training to health and human service providers throughout the Long Island region and was instrumental in curriculum development.
