Virtual Reality (VR)

The use of virtual reality (VR) in teaching and learning  offers significant benefits by creating immersive and interactive learning environments where students can engage with complex subjects hands-on in a virtual setting. This technology can help to boosts student engagement and retention of information and can support learners in collaborative work by providing virtual spaces for groups to interact and communicate with each other, regardless of location.

Use Cases for VR and AR in the Classroom

Immersive Simulations

Using VR and AR for immersive simulations allows students to practice complex procedures and interact with intricate systems in a risk-free, controlled environment. This hands-on experience enhances understanding and retention, providing practical skills without the limitations and risks associated with real-world training.

Virtual Field Trips

VR and AR virtual field trips transport students to historical sites, diverse ecosystems, and remote locations without leaving the classroom. These immersive experiences deepen understanding and engagement by providing contextual, real-world perspectives that enhance traditional learning materials.

Interactive Learning Labs and Experiments

Using VR and AR for interactive labs and experiments allows students to conduct complex or hazardous experiments in a safe, virtual environment. This approach enhances learning by providing hands-on experience and visualizing concepts that are difficult to replicate in a traditional lab setting from almost any location.

Virtual Classrooms / Collaborative Learning

VR and AR enable virtual classrooms and collaborative learning which allows students and instructors to interact in immersive, real-time virtual spaces regardless of physical location. This technology enhances engagement, facilitates group projects, and fosters a sense of presence and community that can be effective in bridging the gap between online and in-person learning.

Gamification & Enhancing Student Engagement

Using VR and AR to gamify learning activities helps to transform learning into an engaging, interactive experience through educational games, immersive storytelling, and more. This approach motivates students, fosters active participation, and helps to make complex subjects more accessible and enjoyable .

How Can We Help

Course Design

Our department assists instructors in integrating VR and AR technology into their courses by providing resources, training, and support. We can support instructors in the planning and preparation of immersive, interactive learning experiences that improve student engagement and understanding that are aligned to specific assignment goals as well as overall course goals.

VR/AR Training

Our department offers comprehensive VR and AR training for faculty members, equipping them with the skills to effectively implement these technologies in their teaching. We offer hands-on workshops as well as personalized support to ensure that instructors are confident and proficient in incorporating VR/AR technologies into their classrooms.
