Areas of Specialization
Patrick Grim’s work spans ethics, philosophical logic, philosophy of science, philosophy of law, philosophy of mind, contemporary metaphysics and philosophy of religion. He has also published widely in fields beyond philosophy, with computational modeling in theoretical biology, linguistics, decision and game theory, political science and artificial intelligence. He is the author of The Incomplete Universe: Totality, Knowledge, and Truth; the co-author of The Philosophical Computer: Exploratory Essays in Philosophical Computer Modeling (with Gary Mar and Paul St. Denis); Beyond Sets; and Reflexivity: From Paradox to Consciousness (both with Nicholas Rescher). He is the editor of Mind and Consciousness: 5 Questions; of Philosophy of Science and the Occult; and a founding co-editor of more than 30 volumes of The Philosopher’s Annual, an anthology of the best articles published in philosophy each year. He has released three lecture series with the Teaching Company: Questions of Value, Philosophy of Mind: Brains, Thinking Machines, and the Mysteries of Consciousness, and The Philosopher’s Toolkit.
Grim’s current work in philosophical logic attempts to map the reflexive structure of paradox and its implications for a range of philosophical problems from reference and skepticism to semantics, consciousness, and free will. His current work in computational modeling focuses on the dynamics of belief change across communities, the genesis of opinion polarization, epistemic networks and the optimization of scientific organization.
Working in collaboration with the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, Grim’s contributions to the Modeling Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) group have included a better understanding of the impact of communicative networks and levels of trust for the spread of health care beliefs and behaviors within minority communities.
