Stony Brook University has partnered with ModernThink (MT) to conduct an Engagement Survey, which we are calling Be Heard. MT is a nationally recognized organization that focuses on the Higher Education Community. Critical analysis will include Benchmarks by Carnegie Classification, Geographic Region, Enrollment Size as well as benchmarks from their Great Colleges to Work for model.
The purpose of the Be Heard survey is to provide a confidential, structured and effective way for us to better understand our workforce; improve faculty/staff experience; drive better performance, and improve strategies for recruitment and retention. Key areas will focus on collaboration, communication, confidence in senior leadership, inclusion, belonging, and community, faculty and staff well-being, faculty experience, job satisfaction and support, mission and pride, performance management, professional development, and supervisor/department chair effectiveness.
The Be Heard survey is confidential and will provide valuable insights into our faculty and staff’s workplace experience and will help us build a stronger, more supportive work environment
All full-time Stony Brook University State and RF Employees on West Campus, Southampton Campus, and in the Health Sciences Schools, as well as a portion of the School of Medicine are invited and encouraged to participate in the survey.
Exceptions:
In 2018 Stony Brook University participated in a Diversity Climate Survey using baseline
data regarding the work environment for our campuses, hospitals, and Long Island State
Veterans Home. This confidential and anonymous survey was administered by Campus Climate
Surveys, LLC, a subsidiary of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. This instrument was selected by SBU’s Diversity Plan Assessment Committee
in consultation with the Diversity Plan Human Resources Committee, and the Diversity
Plan Faculty Committee. Information from the survey results allowed the University
to identify strengths as well as areas for improvement and enhancement.
Participation in the survey was voluntary and respondents were able to choose not
to respond to any or all questions. Feedback and input shared helped Stony Brook ensure
all members of our community had and continue to have the opportunity to thrive in
a welcoming, supportive, respectful, and safe environment.
In 2023 Stony Brook University Hospital partnered with Press Ganey to administer an Engagement and Culture of Safety Survey, which included specific nurse excellence questions. Press Ganey assisted the Hospital in gathering data to support our mission of providing excellence in health care. The survey used benchmark information on national, academic, and regional healthcare as it reflected on patient facing/clinical and support staff, including academic medical schools. In September of 2025, they will reassess their findings by participating in another engagement and culture of safety survey.
In March of 2025, all full-time Stony Brook University State and Research Foundation Employees on West Campus, Southampton Campus, and in the Health Sciences Schools, as well as a portion of the School of Medicine will be invited and encouraged to participate in an Engagement survey. This survey will not include student employees, part-time employees, or School of Medicine Clinical Faculty and Staff. The School of Medicine Clinical Faculty and Staff and Stony Brook University Hospital will be invited to participate in a separate Engagement Survey, as mentioned above.
All of the surveys are the building blocks to recognizing our strengths, as well as areas for attention.
Participating in a confidential Engagement Survey will assist us in addressing any problematic issues, as well as offer support and reinforcement to what is working well, and creating opportunities for new ideas, programs, and initiatives.
With the support from VP/Dean area leaders, our first, formal engagement survey was planned and prioritized.
August to October 2024 -RFP and state bid posted, reviewed, and completed. The vendor ModernThink has been selected to conduct our first, formal, employee engagement survey.
Modern Think (MT) is a nationally recognized organization that focuses on the Higher Education Community and was chosen due to their extensive experience in the field of higher education engagement and satisfaction surveys. The higher education benchmark data ModernThink will provide will give our institution valuable insight into how we compare to other schools across the nation.
The implementation team, made up of HR leaders and staff across the campus as noted below, launched in December 2024, held its kickoff meeting on January 16, 2025.
