Professor Yazici Collaborates with CUNY on New Research Grant
Professor Yazici collaborates with CUNY on new research grant to examine the use of social media feeds as an incident management support tool. There has been an emerging trend in transportation research to use social media feeds for various purposes ranging from gathering real-time traffic information for traveler information systems, to enabling direct interaction between transportation agencies and customers/passengers. The high population, dense transportation network and popular use of social media in New York City metropolitan area create a particularly interesting “laboratory” for such research directions. In this vein, this study explores ways to efficiently harvest the information content of crowd-sourced online social media feeds (specifically Twitter) for traffic incident/accident data and to effectively use the collected information as a traffic incident management support tool. The proposed concept not only saves the environment from the high toll of emissions and energy waste, it also has the potential to reduce fatalities due to roadway accidents. This project is a collaborative effort of Dr. Anil Yazici (SBU) and Dr. Camille Kamga (City College of New York), and funded by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Specialization Information Session Held for CIV Students
On April 15th, Dr. Walker, Dr. Abdelaziz, Dr. Farhadzadeh, Dr. Giles and Dr. Yazici presented specialization information to civil engineering students. The four specialization areas offered at Stony Brook are: Structural and Construction Materials, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Transportation. Several professors discussed their current areas of research and opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research projects. Please come to Heavy Engineering, Room 250 for more information.

Stony Brook Student Chapter of ASCE Official!
In early November last year, the executive board of Stony Brook's ASCE Student Chapter received its chapter certificate. With formal recognition, they can now participate in ASCE MET Region activities, in particular the concrete canoe competition held annually in the spring. We congratulate the members of ASCE for their hard work and dedication to establish Stony Brook's chapter.
Stony Brook awarded NYS Center for Clean Water Technology
On October 28, 2014, Governor Cuomo announced initial seed funding of $2 million for the establishment of the New York State (NYS) Center for Clean Water Technology. The mission of the Center is to “research, develop and commercialize the next generation of technology to remove nitrogen from septic system and cesspool effluent.” Stony Brook University is a partner with the NYS DEC, Suffolk County and the Town of Southampton on this effort. Southampton Town Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst has been a strong proponent of the effort and said, “Healthy natural wetland habitats are crucial barriers against the coastal erosion and infrastructure devastation of major storms - keeping them healthy is essential. Reducing harmful nitrogen pollution is one of the best ways to do that, and by establishing the Center for Clean Water Technology at Stony Brook University, we can develop better technology to remove this pollution more effectively and efficiently.” Jamie Rubin, Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, said, “as we continue to work toward a stronger, more resilient State, we must seek out innovative solutions that protect our most critically important resources. Through the Center for Clean Water Technology and our emphasis on community planning processes we will come back better than ever before.” The Center is a joint effort of the Civil Engineering Program and the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.
