About the Office for Core Facilities (OCF)
The Office for Core Facilities (OCF) is a unit of OR&I focused on strengthening Stony Brook’s shared research infrastructure and expanding access to advanced instrumentation, technical expertise, and research services. We work with core facilities, colleges, departments, and researchers across the university to support effective, sustainable, and broadly accessible shared research resources.
We help Stony Brook develop and operate core facilities that advance discovery, education, collaboration, and external engagement. Our office supports facilities throughout their lifecycle, from initial planning and startup through ongoing operations, financial sustainability, equipment renewal, and long-term strategic development. We also assist departmental and faculty-led shared resources in adopting practices that improve access, visibility, utilization, and institutional impact.
By coordinating shared infrastructure planning across the university, we help identify unmet research needs, reduce unnecessary duplication, strengthen existing capabilities, and position Stony Brook for major instrumentation and research infrastructure opportunities. We additionally connect researchers with available facilities and expertise, support interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaboration, and help demonstrate the contributions that core facilities make to research, training, innovation, and economic development.
