Policy Statement/Background:

The Stony Brook University Libraries are made up of the Melville Library, Chemistry Library, Math Physics and Astronomy Library, Music Library, Southampton Library, and the Health Sciences Library (collectively referred to as “The Stony Brook University Libraries").

Policy:

Registered students, actively employed staff and faculty with a University issued photo ID card are eligible to borrow library material. Current faculty, staff, and students from other SUNY campuses also have borrowing privileges with a photo ID issued by their school. Some non-SBU patrons may be eligible for borrowing privileges with departmental sponsorship and a Guest Borrower Sponsor Form.

Courtesy borrowing privileges may also be extended to individuals who are:

  • Members of organizations designated by the University President
  • Stony Brook Alumni
  • Research staff at Brookhaven National Laboratories and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
  • Visiting Scholars
  • Members of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)

Residents of the community and of the State of New York may use the facilities and most of the collections, but are not eligible to borrow items unless they register as a Community Borrower. There is a $60 annual fee for borrowing privileges as a Community Borrower.

The Stony Brook University Libraries is a member of the Research Libraries Partnership (RLP). Through this membership, individuals with a University identification card may be able to access the libraries of other RLP institutions, such as Columbia University, Yale, Princeton University, and New York University. This program allows for onsite use of most collections, not borrowing privileges. Anyone interested in visiting a participating library should contact that library prior to the visit.

Loan Periods

Most items for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and emeritus faculty are loaned for a semester. Some items may have shorter loan periods.

Courtesy borrowers such as Stony Brook University alumni, Community Borrowers, Brookhaven National Laboratories staff, and OLLI members have a loan period of 60 days.

Definitions:

  • Community Borrower: residents of the community and the State of New York who are not affiliated with Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratories and Cold Spring Laboratory.
