Long Island Algonquian
Program Overview
Join us as we work to revitalize the Algonquian languages. These are the languages of the Native American nations of Eastern Long Island — Montaukett, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug. We host courses in which members of the Nations as well as Stony Brook students learn the languages together and discuss the rich cultural history of the Native American Nations.

Algonquian Language Revitalization Project (ALRP)
Members of the Department of Linguistics have been working for about a decade with leaders from the Native American nations of Eastern Long Island — Montaukett, Shinnecock, and Unkechaug — in a project to revitalize their Algonquian languages, which have not been spoken for many generations. The Department of Languages and Cultutal Studies now hosts courses in which members of the Nations and Stony Brook students learn the languages together. The project also includes a small library of materials on East Coast Native American languages and cultures.
Funding for the project has been provided by the Department of Linguistics, Office of the Vice President for Equity & Inclusion, the College of Arts and Sciences, and by grants from the National Science Foundation and the New York State Assembly.
Minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies
Offered through the NAIS Initiative, the minor in Native American and Indigenous Studies offers students a curriculum
focused on the historical, political, cultural, linguistic, and artistic contributions
of Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island (North America), Abiayala (Latin America),
and globally.
