On-campus Opportunities


URECA summer research 
has 3 options/pathways:

Explorations in STEM - Open to students doing research in STEM-fields. Students relatively new to doing research (freshmen/sophomores), especially those doing research in electrical, mechanical, civil engineering and chemical engineering fields, are particularly encouraged to apply. Frances Velay Women and Science Research Fellowship - Open to students pursuing majors and proposing research in the following areas: astronomy, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, earth & space Sciences, engineering chemistry, geology, and/or physics. URECA Summer Programs - Open to students doing faculty mentored research in all majors/fields. This program is the primary source of funding for SB students doing faculty-mentored summer research. For more information, go to  URECA Summer Research Program  page.

*The three programs, Explorations in STEM,  Velay Fellowship, & URECA Summer (May 26-July 31, 2026) are funded through multiple sources and donors. Interested students should complete the central URECA application by the deadline (March 13, 2026) and check all programs/tracks to which they are applying (multiple selections can be made). Please be aware that some programs require participation in weekly programming meetings/events.

Use the link below to apply to any of the URECA programs (including Explorations in STEM, URECA Summer,  Velay Fellowship). Please note that the URECA Application requires uploads of the following documents:  a) personal statement (1 page or less), b) research project proposal (1-3 pages), c) unofficial transcript,  d) resume/CV (optional, but recommended); plus a letter from the proposed faculty mentor.

SUPPLEMENTAL HOUSING FORM*

*A limited number of full or partial awards are available to help support on-campus housing costs for participants accepted to the  Explorations in STEMVelay Fellowship and/or URECA Summer programs. To apply for supplemental housing support, please complete the form below, after submitting your summer application. Note: Completion of the supplemental housing application form does not automatically guarantee that an award will be offered. Students who are Pell eligible and/or first generation who require housing support to be able to participate in summer research are strongly encouraged to apply for the SUNY SOAR program.

Oncology Research and Clinical Learning Experience (ORACLE) Program - new! - this  program is geared towards aspiring physicians-scientists with interests in cancer research. ORACLE is housed within Stony Brook’s Cancer Center and the Medical Scientist Training Program . The ORACLE program provides  a stipend of 5,000,  and a housing and meal allowance.  Application link and deadline: MARCH 1, 2026  

 

SUNY SOAR - this CIE-URECA partnership program provides summer research opportunities for students who are first-generation college students or economically disadvantaged. The SUNY SOAR program provides on-campus housing, plus a stipend and meal allowance.  Application deadline: MARCH  2026 (check back later)
