History of the Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP)
The Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program originated thanks to the generous support of two Stony Brook alumni, Mr. Allen Tsao’70’72 and Ms. Susan Bernstein Tsao’68.
Susan and Allen met while studying at Stony Brook, where they both studied Biology. After graduating from Stony Brook, Allen went on to obtain a Master’s in Marine Science in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and then served as a high school health teacher for 35 years. Susan became a middle school science teacher right after graduation and served in this post for 33 years.

As Seawolves for life, the Tsaos have maintained their connection to the campus community throughout the years. In 2002, Allen collaborated with the Office of the Dean of Students to bring Stony Brook’s SAFE and Swallow This! peer education programs to the high school where he was teaching. They have also participated in Stony Brook’s host family program, hosting international students and helping them acclimate to their new home in the United States.
As lifelong teachers, the Tsaos have experienced firsthand the important role that social activities and campus life have in the development and growth of young minds. In addition, as a Resident Assistant and student leader, Allen was deeply involved in the campus community and witnessed the positive impact that participation in campus activities, such as social and outdoor activities, has in developing a sense of belonging, building relationships with others, and creating lasting memories.

In 2021, the Tsaos approached the Division of Student Affairs to contribute to and develop a program that enhances student life and creates additional opportunities for connection between Seawolves. The Seawolves Outdoor Adventure Program (SOAP) provides just that, helping students to build connections with other fellow Seawolves in a fun and outdoor environment, and perhaps meet their friends for life!
