Mission Statement

The Stony Brook Research and Development Park  fosters the growth of regional communities of innovation,  helping to nucleate regional industry clusters in the  medical and technology sectors that will drive the future economy of  Long Island as well as New York State and the nation.  Park facilities will be occupied by researchers designing  solutions to some of society's most pressing problems  on the foundations of scientific research and cutting  edge technologies, by entrepreneurs building new  business ventures around these solutions, by  established enterprises whose competitiveness  depends on keeping ahead of the technology curve,  and by business services professionals and  management, and workforce development and training  entities, supporting these high-growth activities. The  program model, which is informed by the thinking of the  Association of University Research Parks, is being  piloted in the Park’s initial facilities: the New York State  Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information  Technology (CEWIT), which opened in the spring of  2009 as the first building in the Park, and the Advanced  Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC),  which opened in the summer of 2011 and was  designated a New York State Center of Excellence in  the spring of 2012. Anticipated in 2021, a third building, the Innovation and Discovery Center (IDC), will open its doors.

Unlike academic and research  buildings on the campus, the R&D Park's facilities are being  designed not only to offer unique research capabilities  fundamental to their theme areas to a mix of  researchers, entrepreneurs, and users from corporate,  government and other academic settings;  but also to  provide facilities, programs and access to resources  that will accelerate the commercialization of new  technologies arising out of these programs and others.
