Your part of the file includes: CV; Statements on research, teaching, and service (three separate statements); Sample publications, talks, and/or creative works; Courses taught; Honors and awards; Dissertations and/or theses advised; Sample syllabi; List of external reviewers; Service to your department, university, and profession.

Your tenure file will be sent for external review. Depending on your field, this stage of the process can take different amounts of time.

Your departmental review committee will evaluate your file. Tenured and full professors will vote and your chair or committee head will write a letter to the dean. The college or school promotion and tenure committee will review your file and vote. Your file will then be submitted to your dean for their review and recommendation.
Provost's Office Review
By April 1, your dean will submit your file to the Provost's Office. The Provost's Office will review your file and make its recommendation. You will have five days to review your evaluative file and the Provost's Office recommendation before the President's Office review begins.
Reconsideration: If you have not had a successful promotion/tenure review, your department may request a reconsideration within 2 months of receiving notice of the negative result. You will then provide a new set of materials/publications/scholarly activity for consideration during the terminal year of appointment and additional external referees are to be selected to conduct a fresh evaluation of the promotional package. The letters to the new external referees requesting evaluation of the file should not signal a failed prior review. The file that is forwarded for reconsideration, however, should include all information (including the first set of letters from external referees). As this resubmission occurs in the “terminal year of appointment” if it is not successful, you will be considered terminated at the end of the year.
President's Office Review
The President's Office will review your file and submit their recommendation to the SUNY Chancellor. The Provost's Office will notify you of the President's recommendation before the start of your 13th semester.

Expedited Tenure
Expedited tenure is granted as part of the hiring process. It is only for senior hires: faculty or administrative leadership who have already held tenure at another institution. In these cases, candidates are hired with the understanding that they are qualified for tenure at the point of hire.

Going up for tenure early is rare. If a faculty member is hired after serving in a tenure-track position elsewhere, they can discuss with their chairs receiving "prior service credit" for that time. This should be confirmed at the point of hiring or shortly after arrival to campus.
Continue Reading...Extension of Time-to-Tenure
Tenure clock extensions may be considered for personal or professional reasons.
This extension may be accomplished through:
- A reduction in work hours that would be reflected in a reduction of the faculty member's effort, with a comparable reduction in salary, or
- A transfer of the faculty member’s appointment to a position of qualified academic rank, for example a visiting assistant professor.
The faculty member may request an extension of the tenure clock with a letter to the appropriate department chair or area coordinator.
