Seed Translational Research Projects (STRPs) for the Accelerating Research Translation (ART) Program

OVPR is actively accepting applications for this internal competition. If you are interested in applying, you must submit a pre-application through the internal competitions submission portal. Pre-application requirements are listed in the announcement below.

The Office of the Vice President for Research invites applications for Seed Translational Research Projects (STRPs) for the Accelerating Research Translation (ART) Program. The ART program will support IHEs that want to build the necessary infrastructure to boost the overall institutional capacity to accelerate the pace and scale of translation of fundamental research outcomes into practice by supporting the development of a range of activities essential for this activity. ART awardees will be required to identify and fund at least TWO active Seed Translational Research Projects (STRPs) selected from across the full spectrum of research activities supported within the lead institution. An STRP candidate would be an innovation that has emerged from prior fundamental research with a clear underlying analytical and/or experimental proof of concept that has been completed. There should be a demonstrable application of research outcomes from areas supported by NSF, although it could additionally include work in other disciplines not listed in these Research Areas. It is important to have a project at a high maturity level, i.e., ready for translation and can be on its way to start producing measurable impacts in a short time (e.g., within 2 years). There could be a need for more time to garner a larger-scale impact beyond this period, but some outcomes should be evident in the short term.

Stony Brook University’s ART application will contain at least TWO active STRPs. TWO STRPs will be selected to move forward with the NSF submission.

Please see below for details. If you are interested in applying as a STRP, you must submit the internal competitions form by Friday, April 7, 2023. Pre-applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Pre-applications for internal review and selection must be uploaded to the portal as a single PDF document. The competition code for this program is LC202336.

WHAT DOES IT FUND:The ART program provides funding to build institutional capacity and the infrastructure needed to conduct translational research activities. The STRP should have a justifiable path of achieving a prototype in an accelerated manner (< 2 years) that can be demonstrated in an environment relevant to the intended usage of the innovation.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS: No restrictions

AWARD: Each STRP is expected to be supported for up to 185k per year for up to two years.

SPONSOR DEADLINE: May 23, 2023

A complete pre-application should comprise of the following:

  • Abstract (no more than one page) of the STRP that includes a title, a brief description, including a description of the project’s maturity, specific tangible outcomes/deliverables expected, timeline, and an exit strategy.
  • List of key personnel with a brief description (1-2 sentences) of each investigator's expertise as it relates to the STRP
