The Brook & Beyond Challenge gives faculty researchers the opportunity to accelerate high-impact innovations. The challenge helps innovators bring breakthrough ideas to market. With milestone-based funding, mentorship, and investor exposure, this program is the launchpad for research-driven solutions and startups ready to transform industries and improve lives.

 

  • Compete to win up to $50,000 in funding per team based on track
  • Mentorship from commercialization and industry experts
  • Connections to investors and licensing partners
  • Visibility within Stony Brook and the NY innovation ecosystem
  • Training to sharpen pitches, business models, and go-to-market strategies
  • Stony Brook University faculty researchers with innovation-based solutions
  • Teams addressing real-world challenges with commercial or societal impact
  • Applicants ready to commit to training, mentorship, and milestone deliverables
  • Apply as a team (no individual applicants)
  • Select your track: Ideation or Proof of Concept
  • Participate in training modules and mentorship sessions
  • Pitch your project live at the Final Showcase
  • Receive funding based on judges’ evaluation of impact and readiness

Compete in One of Two Tracks

Track 1: Ideation

For early-stage concepts and innovations still in the ideation phase.

  • Funding Cap: Up to $10,000
  • Focus: Validating feasibility, defining customer needs, or developing initial prototypes.
  • Eligibility: Teams with no prior funding or only minimal progress toward proof of concept.



Track 2: Proof of Concept (POC)

For advanced projects with a developed prototype or preliminary data demonstrating feasibility.

  • Funding Cap: Up to $50,000
  • Focus: Refining technology, preparing for scaling, or approaching commercialization partners.
  • Eligibility: Teams must demonstrate prior progress or evidence of feasibility (e.g., functional prototype, validated data).
