2021 Student Awards

 

 

New York State Awards

American Council of Engineering Companies of NY (ACEC) Jaros, Baum & Bolles Scholarship 

To promote the civil engineering profession, award outstanding students, and help New York retain promising young talent, ACEC New York administers a statewide scholarship program. Since the program’s inception in 2002, the council has awarded $915,500 collectively to 325 high-achieving engineering students attending New York State colleges and universities. One Stony Brook student won this award for 2020:

WTS International - Greater New York Chapter Susan Miszkowicz Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

Since 1977, WTS International, then called Women’s Transportation Seminar, has focused on promoting the advancement of women in the transportation industry. The Susan Miszkowicz Scholarship is awarded to encourage bright new professionals to undertake careers in transportation and related fields. For 2019, one Stony Brook student received this award:

Stony Brook University Awards

Othmar Ammann Scholarship 

The Othmar Ammann Scholarship in Civil Engineering was established in memory of Othmar Ammann (1879-1965). Mr. Ammann was a prominent civil engineer in New York City and is best known for his accomplishments in the field of bridge-design engineering. This award was established soon after the Civil Engineering Program began at Stony Brook University in 2012 and is one of the most prestigious awards given to civil engineers at the university level.

Undergraduate Recognition Award

Academic Excellence

Students who receive an Undergraduate Recognition Award for Academic Excellence Award have a 3.4 or higher GPA and have achieved academic accomplishments that go beyond the classroom experience.

Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship for Environmental Studies and Waste Management 

In 1997, Stony Brook University recognized Dr. Evan Liblit’s contributions to solid waste management and recycling, and established a memorial scholarship in his name. Dr. Liblit was a scholar in SoMAS and the award is part of an endowment established in his honor.

Jeffrey Eng Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to students studying any area of environmental sciences at Stony Brook University. Awardees demonstrate academic excellence and future academic success.

Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (SUNY LSAMP) Scholarship

Stony Brook University is the project headquarters and the lead institution of the State University of New York Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. SUNY LSAMP is funded to increase the number of underrepresented minorities (African-American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native, Hawaiian Native, and Native Pacific Islander) who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The LSAMP program is especially interested in high-achieving students who intend to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in science or mathematics and bachelor degrees in engineering. SUNY LSAMP and Stony Brook LSAMP are funded by the National Science Foundation, Division of Human Resource Development, and administered through the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook University.

National Engaged Leader Award from the National Society of Leadership and Success

This award (formerly the National Excellence in Leadership Certificate) is presented to members who go above and beyond the steps for membership, and is distributed by the advisor at the chapter induction ceremony.

Department of Civil Engineering Awards

Academic Excellence Award

The Academic Excellence Award is generally awarded to a graduating civil engineering student who has obtained the highest cumulative GPA; however, a student who has a second major and minors, relevant research and internship(s), and held leadership roles in program-related CEAS professional societies and honor societies may also be considered.

Student Award of Honor

Award of Honor Certificates are given to the top 5% (by GPA) of all graduating students (among BE, MS and PhD candidates) or for outstanding achievement (e.g., second majors, research accomplishments) and/or dedication (i.e., service) to the department and CEAS.

The Civil Engineering Gateway Fellowship

This award is given to outstanding undergraduate students in their final year of study who want to pursue a MS degree in Civil Engineering at Stony Brook. The Gateway Fellowship award is both a scholarship to be applied towards graduate tuition and an opportunity for students to link their graduate education with industry experience.

Best Senior Design Report

The senior design project is a capstone experience that every civil engineer must complete to graduate. This year, the awards committee wanted to recognize the best senior design report. For their project "Design of Stormwater Pump Stations for Good Samaritan Hospital", the inaugural award is presented to:

Harold Walker Hard Hat Award

This award was established in 2018 to honor the inaugural chair of the Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Harold Walker, a premiere researcher in the field of Environmental Engineering and respected educator. The winner of this award brings determination, hard work and dedication to push the field of Environmental Engineering forward.

Banner Bearer

The Banner Bearer for the Department of Civil Engineering at the CEAS Convocation is awarded to a graduating student who has contributed significantly to the CEAS through leadership (e.g., ASCE) and/or academic excellence and who should be honored as a procession leader by carrying our department's banner for the CEAS Convocation.
