The TEA Summer Camp is offered by the Center of Entrepreneurial Finance (CEF) and Innovation Center (IC) at the College of Business of Stony Brook University. Stony Brook University is ranked the #1 public university in New York in the U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Colleges ranking. Its College of Business is fast-growing and AACSB accredited, with outstanding business researchers and leaders serving as instructors. The College of Business graduate program in entrepreneurship studies has been recognized by Princeton Review as one of the Top 50 graduate schools for four consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024).

1. Program objective

This camp aims to inspire and prepare high school students for pursuing technology entrepreneurship. It highlights several emerging technologies and covers the foundational steps necessary for individuals to commercialize their inventions based on proven processes used by successful entrepreneurs by addressing these fundamental questions: Does a business idea have the potential to become a successful business?  How to discover potential customers’ needs and desires? How to start a new venture with limited resources? How to craft a successful business pitch? The ultimate outcomes for this workshop are to increase the awareness, excitement, and confidence of participants about emerging technology and entrepreneurship.

3. What will they will be doing:*

  • Learn about the entrepreneurial process via lectures and discussions
  • Work on experiential exercises to gain insights on the opportunity generating process and customer discovery phase
  • Be familiar with the key components of business pitches and financing strategies

    • Eligibility: High-school students (9th to 12th grade)

5. Program instructors

Richard Chan, Co-Director of Innovation Center and Center of Entrepreneurial Finance

Richard Chan is an Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Stony Brook University's College of Business. His research domain is broadly situated at the intersection of psychology, technology, and entrepreneurial finance. Specifically, he investigates how actors' cognitive processes, shaped by individual differences and altered by social and ambient environments, influence the evaluations of entrepreneurial opportunities. His work has appeared in the Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Venture Capital, and Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings and mentioned by media. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Business Venturing and Journal of Management and directs the Innovation Center and Center of Entrepreneurial Finance.

Dr. Manoj Mahajan,  Co-Director of Innovation Center

Dr. Mahajan has served in the federal government and the private industry in executive positions in scientific and business development roles. He was a technology adviser to the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for National Information Technology Transformation, managed geospatial, imagery, and STEM research programs. He currently works at Stony Brook's CEWIT as a Senior Research Scientist with an appointment in the College of Business and Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Edward R. Fabian, Advisor Chair, Innovation Center 

As a passionate advocate for continuous prosperity for Long Island, Mr. Edward R. Fabian serves as a change agent committed to imagining new possibilities for the region. As the President of American Eagle Systems, an Information Technology firm that provides data protection and audit compliance solutions for clients managing substantial amounts of data, Mr. Fabian has become a respected and trusted resource engaged to provide detailed and comprehensive data center specific forecasting towards business continuity, risk mitigation and disaster readiness. His decades of experience in managing a successful local enterprise has bestowed first-hand knowledge of the opportunities, complexities and difficulties in fostering continued economic development in the region. Mr. Fabian is a Partner and Board Member with the Energeia Academy for Regional Stewardship at Molloy College. The Partnership focuses on achieving excellence in empowering the Long Island region with leaders able and willing to serve as trustees, who act with integrity on behalf of the common good, to strengthen and transform our region for the future. Mr. Fabian is dedicated to identifying and addressing the complex and multi-dimensional issues challenging the Long Island region and strives to recruit proven and ethical leaders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors to assist in improving quality of life for all residents.

Louis Peña, Director of Life Sciences Innovation & Entrepreneurship (LiSIE) program and Advanced Graduate Certificate

Louis Peña is the Director of the Life Sciences Innovation & Entrepreneurship (LiSIE) program and Advanced Graduate Certificate. LiSIE is a collaboration between the College of Business, the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences, and the Center for Biotechnology. Dr. Peña’s career spans biomedical research, technology commercialization, management, and education. He has worked with biotechnology startups and early stage companies. Author of 8 patents, his inventions led to a startup that progressed through preclinical and clinical development to exit by acquisition. As an Adjunct Professor, he has taught a variety of subjects ranging from science (biophysics, neuroanatomy, physiology) to management (HR, CRM, Healthcare Policy & Ethics).

James Henry Dunne, Partner, Innovation Center

James Henry Dunne, J.D., M.A., B.A., A.A.S., joined the SUNY Stony Brook University College of Business in 2023. He prides himself on fusing his vast and varied experiences in legal practice, entrepreneurial endeavors, management and operations, higher education, and peer-reviewed publication, to create a unique, engaging, and impactful classroom experience for the students he has the opportunity to work with. He is a licensed and practicing attorney in the state of New York with much of his practice dedicated to providing legal counsel pertaining to corporate law, corporate governance, business transactions, risk management, human resource and employment law, NYS and County regulatory compliance, and intellectual property, for entrepreneurial start-ups, established business operators, and multi-unit organizations. He is experienced at providing legal counsel at all stages of the business cycle for a vast array of industries, including but not limited to Licensed Professionals, Health Care, Retail Businesses, Trades, Contractors, Not-for-Profits, and the Food, Beverage and Hospitality Industries.

Jungsoo Ahn, Assistant Professor, Strategy and Entrepreneurship

Jungsoo Ahn serves as an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Stony Brook University's College of Business. His research focuses on the critical role of firm categorization in influencing investor evaluations and guiding their investment decisions, particularly within the corporate venture capital (CVC) landscape of fintech and blockchain startup crowdfunding. His work has been published in esteemed journals and books, such as the Journal of International Business Studies and the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. His work has been recognized with numerous best paper awards from respected institutions, including the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society. Dr. Ahn earned his Ph.D. in Strategy from the University of Western Ontario and holds an MS and BBA from Yonsei University.

Danling Jiang, Co-director, Center of Entrepreneurial Finance & Blockchain Business Lab

Danling Jiang is a Professor of Finance and the Associate Dean for Programs at the College of Business, Stony Brook University. She co-directs the Center of Entrepreneurial Finance and the Blockchain Business Lab. Dr. Jiang’s research involves studying equity and digital asset investments, corporate finance, and financial decision-making from behavioral and social finance approaches. Her research typically integrates economics, psychology, political science, and sociology into finance. Her work has been published in leading journals spanning the fields of finance, management, accounting, and judgment and decision-making, including the Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Review of Finance, Review of Asset Pricing Studies, Review of Accounting Studies, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Financial Markets, and Financial Analysts Journal, among others.
