ERGONOMICS AWARENESS MONTH (OCTOBER 2026)

October is Ergonomics Awareness Month! Ergonomics is about fitting the job to the worker—not forcing the worker to work in an uncomfortable or unsafe position. Poor ergonomic conditions can contribute to injuries such as muscle strains, back injuries, tendonitis, and other musculoskeletal disorders. These injuries can develop gradually, so it is important to recognize warning signs before a minor discomfort becomes a serious problem.

Common Ergonomic Hazards

  • Awkward postures: bending, twisting, reaching, kneeling, or working overhead.
  • Heavy or repetitive lifting: especially when lifting from the floor or above shoulder height.
  • Repetitive motions: performing the same movement repeatedly for long periods.
  • Forceful exertion: pushing, pulling, gripping, or handling heavy loads.
  • Prolonged positions: standing, sitting, or holding one position for extended periods.
  • Poor workstation setup: improperly positioned desks, monitors, tools, or equipment.
  • Vibration: prolonged use of vibrating tools or equipment.

What Can We Do?

  • Plan the job. Identify awkward positions, heavy loads, and repetitive tasks before beginning.
  • Use mechanical assistance. Whenever practical, use carts, hoists, lift tables, dollies, or other material-handling equipment.
  • Keep loads close to your body. Avoid reaching and twisting while carrying.
  • Use proper lifting techniques. Assess the load first, get help when needed, and avoid lifting beyond your capabilities.
  • Adjust your workstation. Position equipment and tools so frequently used items are easy to reach and work can be performed in a neutral posture.
  • Report problems early. Don't wait until pain becomes severe. Report discomfort, ergonomic concerns, or unsafe conditions to your supervisor.

Safety Talks promote Safety Awareness.  Please find the Safety Talk for the month of September. If you are a supervisor, please share the Safety Talk with your employees and sign off on this digital sign in sheet. All others should read the Safety Talk and sign the form for themselves. Completed Safety Talks shall be kept on file by the department.
