Workplace Violence Procedure
No employee shall be retaliated against in his/her employment for reporting intimidation, threats or acts of violence.
Immediate Response to Incident of Workplace Violence
- All employees (faculty and staff) are encouraged to report any violation of the workplace violence (WPV) policy to a supervisor. Supervisors are required to report violations .The employee may be requested to document their experience and observations in order to facilitate the handling or resolution of the situation.
- Any individual who witnesses violence or feels there may be an immediate threat to someone's safety is required to call for police assistance. DO NOT BECOME INVOLVED IN ANY WORKPLACE VIOLENCE SITUATION – Call 911 ((631)632-6333 from a mobile phone) for University Police assistance.
- In other than an emergency, any employee may call University Police at (631)632-6350 or Human Resources at (631)632-6151, for consultation or assistance.
- If an incident of workplace violence has occurred, University Police and the immediate supervisor will consult with the victimized employee to develop and implement individualized workplace safety plans, which may include, when necessary and appropriate, advising co-workers of the situation; setting up procedures for alerting University Police; temporarily relocating the victim to a secure area; options for voluntary transfer or permanent relocation to a new work site; reassignment of parking space; escort for entry to and exit from the building; addressing telephone, fax, e-mail or mail harassment; and keeping a photograph of the abuser and/or a copy of any existing court orders in a confidential on-site location and providing copies to University Police Department (UPD) personnel and other staff where it is appropriate and necessary to do so as determined by University Police.
