What is the Student Affairs Opportunity Expo?

The Student Affairs Opportunity Expo is a new initiative aimed at connecting current higher education institutions with those who are interested in positions in Student Affairs (SA). This can include:

Current SA professionals who are looking to shift to a new institution or other area in SA,
Recent graduates from higher education programs looking for their first career in SA, or
Anyone interested in shifting from a different area of work to SA.

We are advertising this expo to prospective candidates seeking entry-level through mid-level positions across our region, including students in higher education graduate preparation programs.

Employers can highlight their institutions, interview for currently available positions, or recruit for positions that will be available in the future.

Please share the Expo with your network and colleagues! Whether it is LinkedIn posts, other social media, listservs, or word of mouth, it would be great for us to work together to make the event a success!

Travel to Stony Brook

From JFK airport, take the AIRTRAIN link from any terminal to Jamaica station for the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). The $5 trip to Jamaica station lasts approximately 20 minutes.

From Jamaica Station, take the LIRR (Port Jefferson line, eastbound) to the Stony Brook station, about a 1.5-hour ride. One-way fares range from $11.00 to $15.25, depending on the time of day. Purchase your LIRR ticket from one of the ticket machines before boarding the train. There is an additional fee when buying a ticket from the conductor onboard the train. The ticket machines accept U.S. Currency in small denominations, credit cards, and debit cards. For more service information, please check the AIRTRAIN website and the LIRR website.

From LGA airport, take LIRR to Woodside and then take LaGuardia Link Q70 bus. Visit this link for more info: https://new.mta.info/guides/airports/laguardia

If traveling from New York City (Penn Station, 34^th Street, and 7^th Avenue), take LIRR’s Port Jefferson line to the Stony Brook station. One-way fares range from $14.25 to $19.75, depending on the time of day. Tickets purchased from the conductor onboard the train will cost more. Passengers may have to change trains at a station along the line. This is indicated in the schedule pamphlet and announced on the train. When your ticket is being collected or purchased, ask the conductor for information about if or where you have to change trains.

Pay phones are coin-operated using quarter coins. If you are using your cell phone, you will need to dial any required long-distance code (such as 1+) and the Suffolk County area code (631) before the numbers listed above.
Take the Long Island Expressway (I-495, also called the “L-I-E”), east. Continue on the LIE to Exit 62N, Nicolls Road (County Route 97). Drive nine miles north on Nicolls Road, directly to the main entrance of the Stony Brook campus, on the left. You will see signs to direct you. Looking for where to park on campus?

METERED LOTS: Visitors may park in any Stony Brook University metered lot for a fee of $2.50/hour payable at the lot with a debit or credit card only (no cash is accepted). Metered lots are enforced Monday-Friday from 7am-7pm. Outside of those hours, there is no fee to park in these lots. Parking garages are enforced every day. The Administration Garage, located on West Campus is free on Saturday and Sunday.

PARKING GARAGES: Visitors may park in any Stony Brook University parking garage for an hourly fee. The University has three parking garages. Two are located on East Campus (the Hospital Garage and the Health Sciences Center Garage) and one is located on West Campus (Administration Garage). View Parking Garage information and rates.

For Employers

Please arrive at the Stony Brook University Student Activities Center (SAC) by 8 am for check-in and set-up.

Curtain dividers will be placed between each institution to provide privacy for interviews.

Continental Breakfast for Wednesday and Thursday. Lunch will be provided on Wednesday. There will also be light refreshments available throughout the day.

Each institution is curating its own experience for candidates - we encourage you to provide as much detail about the next steps as possible after each interview.
Please reach out to candidates, whether as a thank you with a second follow-up, or as a way to formally continue the application and interview process.
- We encourage you to reach out to candidates within a week, butno later than 2 weeks.
We will reach out to you after the Expo is complete with a short survey to collect your feedback and experience about the event so we can improve our process for next year!

For Candidates

Please print copies of your resume to give to interviewers, especially for walk-in interviews.

Some institutions may view these interviews as casual discussions, while others may view them as formal first-round interviews. Because of this, we suggest that you prepare for the Expo as though you are partaking in first-round interviews. This means:
- Dress in business casual or business professional attire.
- Research and review general interview questions.
- Think about the kinds of positions you would be interested in - Don’t be afraid to interview for positions outside of your comfort zone!
- Bring a means to take your own notes, whether that is a laptop or notebook/notepad.

Each institution will let you know after your interview what the next steps are. The next steps are at the discretion of each institution, but you will receive follow-up communications directly from them within 1-2 weeks.
