Stony Brook University’s School of Professional Development has an employment opportunity for a graduate assistant who has demonstrated experience in journalism, public relations and/or marketing communications to assist with marketing its academic programs.
In this position, the GA will support SPD’s Marketing and Communications Office by creating content, managing social media outlets, developing marketing strategy, and managing SPD’s website. She/he/they will work with SPD faculty and staff to collect information and develop content that will be used in feature stories, program descriptions, brochures, social media outlets and mass emails. The GA will have the opportunity to acquire short published clips, videos, and campaign collateral for his/her/their portfolio.
Graduate Assistant Responsibilities
- Website Management: Using our OmniUpdate Content Management System the GA will assist with managing the website including performing new updates and building new pages and mini-sites.
- Marketing Strategy: Assist with developing and implementing the marketing strategy around SPD’s initiatives.
- Social Media Management. Assist with the management of SPD’s social media channels, to include content creation and maintaining a publication schedule.
- Brand Management: Responsible for reviewing all marketing materials for the department and working with other staff members to ensure the department is upholding the University brand.
- Content Development: Assist with the creation of written, visual and multimedia content, to include marketing copy, photography, and video production to promote SPD’s academic programs.
- Asset Management: Identify potential photography and audio assets for us to purchase and ensures that our current photography and video assets are saved and easily retrievable.
- Communications: The GA will communicate with prospective and current students to answer questions and share information about upcoming information sessions, orientations, and webinars.
- Data Management: Create online forms and manage data collection.
- Marketing Research: Conducts research on trends in higher education marketing.
- Other duties as assigned. Proofreading, administrative tasks and ad hoc tech support.
Required Skills
Our ideal candidate:
- is highly motivated and capable of working within tight (but reasonable) deadlines;
- has exceptional writing and editing skills, sharp analytical skills, meticulous attention to detail and factual accuracy, and familiarity with Internet research; and
- is experienced with social media management
Preferred Skills
We don't expect you to have all of these, but more is definitely better!

Software/Online Platforms: OmniUpdate, Photoshop, InDesign or QuarkXpress, Premiere or iMovie, Acrobat Pro, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, and YouTube.
- Communications: Content development and strategy, web standards, videography and print design.
Supervision and Training
Kim Giacalone, SPD’s Director of Content and Communications, will supervise and provide training.
Working Conditions
- The GA will have a Mac workstation.
- Some on-site work may be necessary.
- There may be an opportunity for some remote work.
Hours/Salary
20 hrs/week. GA salary as specified by HR for the current academic year.
