Bio: 

Joseph Schurz is a third-generation machinist whose passion for manufacturing began alongside his father, learning the trade through hands-on experience. With more than 30 years of experience as a prototype machinist, he has built a career centered on precision craftsmanship, innovative problem-solving, and the practical application of manufacturing technologies.

Joseph serves as the Supervisor of CEAS Support Shops and Instructor for Mechanical Engineering’s Hands-On Introduction to Subtractive Manufacturing course at Stony Brook University. In these roles, he oversees advanced manufacturing facilities while mentoring future engineers through experiential learning, emphasizing the importance of technical proficiency, critical thinking, and safe shop practices.

As a founding member of the Student Shop Managers Consortium (SSMC), Joseph has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among university machine shops and makerspaces while advancing a culture of safety and excellence in engineering education. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to preserving the principles of traditional machining while integrating emerging technologies, preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel in today’s rapidly evolving manufacturing industry.
