William Oliver Presents at the CELT Annual Teaching and Learning Symposium

William Oliver (in the center) presented a talk titled “Promoting a Robot Proof Education in an Introductory Linguistics Course” and participated in a panel at the CELT Annual Teaching and Learning Symposium here at Stony Brook. William highlighted the innovative work that he and Mark Aronoff have been doing to reshape linguistics instruction by advocating for increased use of in-class group activities and reduced reliance on whole-class lectures. He also emphasized the importance of promoting linguistics skills (e.g., developing theoretical models, analyzing language data, etc.) that will be most useful to students in the current labor market. His presentation and contribution to the panel discussion were very well received and inspired faculty from other disciplines to adopt active-learning approaches in their own classroom.
