We have much to celebrate! We invite you to gather with us on May 5 at 7 pm at Flowerfield in St. James, New York for a special gala event where we will have a champagne toast to recognize our accomplishments and launch the next 50 years. 

Annette B. Wysocki, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNYAM, Dean and Professor, Stony Brook School of Nursing, shares the many highlights and achievements of the School of Nursing, showing how the school, students, faculty and community thrived despite the ongoing pandemic, while also inviting readers to celebrate the 50 years of the school’s history and its future.

The School of Nursing has been highlighted in a local TV segment, in newspaper articles and a radio spot focusing on the increase in nursing school enrollment since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This past year, in the midst of unprecedented challenges, the School of Nursing continued to empower the future leaders of nursing. In doing so, we have also once again achieved recognition to maintain our culture of excellence. This infographic highlights the many successes for which SON and all who work here can be proud. Doctoral students have access to three innovative new courses that leverage the broader research community thanks to a partnership within Stony Brook University.

The Stony Brook University School of Nursing reached a milestone in 2020, the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of the undergraduate four-year program in 1970. The school has grown and flourished over its first half century. This article provides both a timeline and perspective of the school’s accomplishments and how the SON has earned its high rankings and reputation as a School of Excellence.

Sylvia K. Wood, a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Doctoral Studies, makes the case for why two terminal degrees in nursing, the PhD and the DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), distinctly different doctorates, are both essential to the advancement of the discipline of nursing. Wood, who already has her DNP and is currently pursuing her PhD, explains why she believes these degrees are mutually beneficial.

SON recognizes the generosity of donors who have made it their mission to give back to a program that has made a difference in their lives so they can pay it forward to our current nursing students.

The new Committee for Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity and Social Justice (IDEAS) meets monthly to promote and nurture an environment of respect and inclusivity and is working on providing support services and guidance for both curriculum and hiring practices to ensure that all students, staff, faculty and administrators feel welcomed, valued and supported regardless of their identity.

The Stony Brook School of Nursing continues to be recognized for the work of its students, faculty and leaders. In 2019, the  Stony Brook University Student Nurses’ Association (SBSNA) was officially recognized as a Stellar School just a few years after it was founded by former students. Further, this year the SBSNA won five national awards at the National Student Nurses’ Association 69th Annual Convention and introduced two resolutions that were successfully passed at the Convention. Nurses who graduate from the undergraduate program at Stony Brook attain an important outcome in the area of leadership knowledge and skill in the promotion of high-quality health care. Here we highlight four SON alumni who are demonstrating advocacy, teamwork, inclusiveness and self-care in the nursing profession.

As part of the School of Nursing’s year-long celebration, a series of monthly lectures were held throughout the academic year that covered a wide variety of issues in nursing, from managing critical COVID-19 challenges to self-care, inviting more than 25 presenters. The free series was an educational opportunity for attendees to earn Nursing Continuing Professional Development credits.

In a fluid pandemic, undergraduate SON students have gotten an opportunity to develop and refine their clinical skills and increase their competency in the area of community health all while providing a valuable contribution during a public health crisis. They participated in the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines at Stony Brook’s POD and worked in non-COVID-19 units at Stony Brook University Hospital.
