One of the country’s leaders in computational geometry, Joseph Mitchell works on the design, analysis, and implementation of efficient algorithms to solve geometric problems arising in robotics, sensor networks, visualization, air traffic management, manufacturing, and geographic information systems. One of his major applications was the development of algorithms in support of air traffic management, particularly for decision support tools to assist air traffic controllers reroute airplanes around inclement weather.
