Biography
Oliver is a conservation ecologist whose research focuses on identifying the drivers of ecosystem structure and function, primarily using stable isotope approaches. He received his PhD in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences from Stony Brook University in 2020 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the New Mexico Center for Stable Isotopes from 2020 – 2022. He served as the Director of Research for the marine non-profit organization, Beneath The Waves, in 2022, before returning to Stony Brook as a Research Assistant Professor in 2023. Oliver’s research spans a broad spectrum of species and study systems throughout the Caribbean, United Kingdom, and United States, where he works closely with state, federal, and non-profit organizations to better understand the responses of marine organisms to anthropogenic activities and climate change. In New York, Oliver is recognized as a leading expert in the conservation ecology of sharks, where he supervises several graduate students working on topics such as movement ecology, ecophysiology, and public perception.
