Summer Travel: What You Need to Know Now
April 10, 2025
Dear International Students,
We hope that you’ve had a successful spring semester! As many international students begin to make summer travel plans, we recognize this may come with a degree of uncertainty.
Please be aware that International travel always involves some risk of re-entry denial. If you are considering travel outside the United States this summer, we strongly encourage you to prepare thoroughly, stay informed about current U.S. travel policies, and allow for flexibility in your plans in case of unexpected delays or changes.
To help you prepare, please review the following guidance:
Before You Travel
- Avoid non-essential travel if you have had any prior interaction with the criminal justice system.
- Be mindful of your digital footprint. Border officials may review content on your personal devices and social media accounts.
We encourage you to review our Know Your Rights webpage for more information.
- Check your travel documents:
-
- Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date to the U.S.
- Visa: Your visa must be unexpired, reflect your current status, and have at least one remaining
entry if it’s limited.
-
- Need a new visa? Be prepared for longer wait times, additional security checks, and potential delays.
- Traveling to Canada or Mexico for 30 days or less? You may qualify for Automatic Visa Revalidation even with an expired visa. Learn more here.
-
- Travel Signature: Check page two of your I-20 (or page one of your DS-2019) to determine if you already have a valid signature. As a reminder, travel signatures are valid for one year from date of issue (for current students and scholars). If your travel signature is expired or will expire before your return to the U.S., submit the Travel Signature Request in accessVIS at least 5-7 days before your return flight.
-
While Traveling:
- Keep your passport, student visa and Form I-20/DS-2019 in your carry-on bag - never in your checked luggage. You'll need these for inspection when you return to the United States.
- Stay informed about any international travel advisories or health regulations that might affect your trip.
Upon Re-Entry to the U.S.
At your U.S. port of entry, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer will review your documents. Be prepared to:
- Present your passport, visa, and Form I-20/DS-2019 for inspection.
- Answer questions about your academic plans, travel, and reason for re-entry—answer clearly and confidently.
- Undergo possible additional screening. While delays can be frustrating, staying patient and cooperative will help the process go smoothly.
If you experience any issues or delays at the border, contact our office or email your International Student Advisor. We’ll be here to support you if needed.
