What is a travel endorsement?

A travel endorsement is a signature from your Designated School Official (VIS advisor) located on page 2 of your Form I-20. This signature is required for re-entry into the United States and serves as confirmation that you are maintaining F-1 status.

A valid travel endorsement is necessary for all re-entry into the U.S., including short trips to Canada or Mexico.

How can I check to see if I have a valid travel endorsement?

Every student issued an 'initial attendance' Form I-20 receives a travel endorsement on page 2. This process eliminates the need for students to visit our office solely for a travel signature or risk traveling outside the U.S. without one. 

For new students issued a "Transfer Pending" Form I-20, a travel endorsement will be provided after they complete the mandatory International Student Check-In process.

F-1 students can locate the travel endorsement section at the bottom of page 2 on their Form I-20. The validity of the travel signature is as follows:

• Enrolled Students: Valid for 1 year from the date of issuance.
• Post-Completion OPT/OPT STEM Extension: Valid for 6 months from the date of issuance.

How do I request a new travel endorsement?

To ensure you are prepared for your trip, request a travel endorsement at least 5–7 business days before your departure.

To request a travel signature, please complete the Travel Signature Request in accessVIS. Once you have submitted the request, your VIS advisor will review it and determine your eligibility. If approved, a new I-20 will be sent to you electronically. The U.S. government no longer requires F-1 students to obtain original signatures (This also applies to their dependents).
