This is a one-semester commitment until the spring semester ends.
Note: Spring semester housing availability is extremely limited.
Spring housing availability depends on vacancies available from fall students not
returning to housing. Applications are processed on a rolling basis, and rooms are assigned to new students
starting around December 26. If Campus Residences cannot meet a student’s request for on-campus housing, their
deposit will be refunded.
Is there a housing deposit?
Students are required to pay a $200 housing deposit online through their Solar Account.
Deposits can be made until January 15 at 5 PM and the housing application must be
completed by January 16 at 4 PM.
If a deposit is paid in Solar today, your Housing Portal will be updated overnight,
and you can proceed with accessing the application the next day when the application
is live. Once in Solar, proceed with the following:
New First Year and Transfer Students: go to Solar > For New Students > Pay Initial Deposits/Fee
New Graduate Students: go to Solar > Campus Housing > Graduate/Family Apt. Deposit to pay
The application will be accessible in the Housing Portal starting October 15, 2025.
How do I apply?
Housing applications and many other transactions are completed via the Housing Portal.
When the application goes live, the student will need to submit their application
by clicking on the “Spring New Student Housing” button on the main page of their Housing
Portal. Visit https://housing.stonybrook.edu/. To log in to the Housing Portal, please use your university NetID and password.

Additional Information
Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH) is a housing option in which two or more students share
a bedroom, suite, and/or apartment regardless of the student's sex, gender identity,
or gender expression. In other words, this option allows for students of any gender
identity to live together regardless of their sex assigned at birth.
Choosing to live in Gender-Inclusive Housing means that residents will have roommates
and/or suitemates of any gender identity.
Residents of Gender Inclusive Housing are committed to creating and affirming a bias-free
environment for everyone living in this community.
If you are interested in Gender Inclusive Housing, you can sign up in the Housing
Portal during published time frames. You will see a button for the GIH sign-up on
the main page of the Housing Portal.
Once that process is live, please review all information prior to submitting it. Once
submitted, you have signed up to live in this community for the Spring 2026 semester.
You will not be able to room change or room swap into gender-designated male or female
housing.
New Spring 2026 students can sign up and view the GIH process in the Housing Portal
from October 15, 2025, at 11 AM until December 18, 2025 at 4 PM. After December 18
at 4 PM, sign-up is closed for the 2025-2026 academic year.
If a student is delayed and cannot make it during the 1 PM-4 PM check-in window on
their scheduled arrival date, they should notify their community's Area Office to
schedule a different time or date. Students can also schedule an 8 PM-9 PM late arrival
window by contacting their Area Office to check in with the RA on Duty.
If on-campus housing is no longer needed, students must submit their cancellation
request in the Housing Portal. Cancellation requests must be made prior to moving
into your assignment. Once you have moved in you are financially liable for the remainder
of your agreement even if you move out. Please see the financial liability website
for full details.
On or before January 15, if a student has not checked in, they will forfeit $100 of
their deposit or, if they did not pay a deposit but committed to housing, be charged
a $100 termination fee.
From January 16 until the Saturday before classes start, if a student has not checked
in, they will forfeit $200 of their deposit or, if they did not pay a deposit but
committed to housing, be charged a $200 termination fee.
Starting the Sunday before classes start, if a student has not checked in, they will
forfeit $500 of their deposit or, if they did not pay a deposit but committed to housing,
be charged a $500 termination fee.
Any resident who cancels their housing agreement loses eligibility for future housing.
Choosing to live off campus requires the student to join a waiting list if they are
interested in housing for a future semester or year. We cannot predict when or guarantee
that students will get on-campus housing by joining the waitlist. See full details
on our financial liability website.
