Biography:

Darien plans on studying machine learning in their time at Stony Brook. In their free time, Darien likes to play basketball, go to the gym, watch movies, and hang out with family/friends. Before becoming a Simons STEM Scholar, Darien did not participate in research. Darien is most excited about building connections, meeting new people, and exploring all of the different fun activities.

Leading the Future:

"I plan to be a part of the change in addressing the lack of minorities working in A.I. and machine learning. There are also problems with making A.I. more accurate that I would like to contribute later on in my career."

Why did you become a Simons STEM Scholar?:

“The reason I chose to become a Simons STEM Scholar had to deal with all of the support I would be obtaining to reach my goals throughout my 4 years of college. With all of the staff and my fellow scholars, everyone wants you to be successful and will do anything they can to help you become successful. That was bigger than anything that I've seen at any other school when I was applying for college. Initially I was looking to commit to a college to play basketball. However, once I was given the chance to become a Simons STEM Scholar, I asked myself, "What's more beneficial to be with what I'm trying to achieve in my career?". Being a part of the program was by far the best choice.”

What would you say to someone who is applying?:

“I would tell anyone thinking about applying to the Simons Stem Scholars that it is probably one of the best choices you can make coming out of high school. Nothing can beat the amount of support you get with this program.”
