Year: Sophomore

High School: Sewanhaka High School

Biography:

Sean plans on studying topology in his time at Stony Brook. In his free time, Sean likes to play the flute, swim, and write code. He also likes to talk to as many new people on campus as he can! Before becoming a Simons STEM Scholar, Sean participated in the CTE Program in Pre-Engineering and the FIRST Tech Challenge. Sean is most excited about becoming part of the mathematics community. From Math Club, to the Summer Math Scholarship, to the current undergraduate students, there is so much support here and Sean thinks he will learn the most from the people.

Leading the Future:

“I plan to conduct research in algebra, topology, and dynamical systems. I am also excited to see the work of the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics.”

Why did you become a Simons STEM Scholar?:

"Community brings access. I did not think I was capable of living away before I found this program, but the close community made this feel more doable, giving me access to a university with academics far better than I could get closer to home. The promise of community here also made me feel like my goal of becoming a mathematics researcher was attainable."

What would you say to someone who is applying?:

“Apply, even if you are not sure that you are "qualified." Everyone, from the staff and counselors to the S1s to your future cohort, is here for your success. Being a scholar is not about your current background, but your curiosity and drive to ask questions. Be yourself, as this authenticity produces the greatest questions, and thus the best journeys to the answers.”
