Major: Biology

Year: Sophomore

High School: York Early College Academy

Biography:

Amber plans on studying Neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases, stem cell therapy and cell biology in their time at Stony Brook. In their free time, Amber loves playing softball, reading sci-fi fantasy books, and baking. When feeling artistic, she paints her nails, makes paper bouquets, and draws. Before becoming a Simons STEM Scholar, Amber participated in The York College Summer Research Program and The Weill Cornell/Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center High School Catalyst Program.  Amber is most excited about learning as much as she can, not only in their STEM classes, but in all other classes. Amber is also excited to learn more about different disciplines.

Leading the Future:

“I hope to discover how we can use stem cell therapy to treat neurodegenerative diseases. Also, I want to set standards for equitable research across the STEM field and rewrite the history of discriminatory research due to lack of representation in STEM.”

Why did you become a Simons STEM Scholar?:

“I choose to become a Simons STEM Scholar because this cohort community is not something I can find anywhere else. I wanted to be around people who all strive to succeed and change the world through STEM. To be a Simons STEM Scholar we move as one unit to learn, laugh and even cry together. I have constant support from my Simons family and know all the resources provided to me will allow me to reach my academic and professional goals. Walking in I knew I would have to work hard and prioritize my academics. Yet, I did not know I'd have the family I have now. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.”

What would you say to someone who is applying?:

“If you think you can change the world alone, this is not for you. If you want to change the world you must work alongside others. Aiming for success while supporting others along the journey is what makes you a Simons STEM Scholar.”
