Finishing the Semester Strong Together
March 31, 2024
Dear Stony Brook Campus Community,
With the start of April this week, we enter one of the busiest stretches of the academic year. There are many end-of-semester events that unite the campus community to acknowledge and celebrate hard-earned accomplishments. Other campus activities bring us together to learn, exchange ideas and explore different points of view. It can also be an exceptionally stressful time, especially for our students, with final projects, exams and other deadlines.
As we gather to enjoy campus traditions and the beautiful spring weather, it is important to be mindful of our core values as a university and the individual responsibility each of us has to help foster a respectful and inclusive campus environment. Please continue to consult the Stony Brook University Guide for Campus Events and Demonstrations that outlines the university’s policies for hosting events, engaging in demonstrations and the expectations for respectful discourse. It provides clarity on what is permitted and the consequences of violating these guidelines.
When we started the academic year together in August, I asked each of you to join me in sustaining a campus climate of decency, civility and respect by becoming familiar with the Guide and implementing these policies with collegiality that is consistent with our values. Let’s continue as a community to being active participants in upholding a campus culture that we can be proud of. We have had an outstanding year and I know together we can finish the year strong, making Stony Brook a place where every member can thrive and be successful. Thank you for all you do for Stony Brook.
Sincerely,
Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
