Information for Incoming Fulbright Students

This page provides information for individuals from overseas who have applied for or received an award from the Fulbright Foreign Student Program to undertake graduate study or mentored research at Stony Brook University.

Important : Do not contact Stony Brook’s Visa and Immigration office at any point in the process, as they do not have access to your visa information. You must instead contact IIE, Laspau, Amideast, or whichever third party is managing your visa on Fulbright’s behalf.

It is crucial that you stay in close contact with the third party managing your visa (IIE, Laspau, Amideast, etc.) and your Fulbright country commission both before your arrival and during your time at Stony Brook.

Your other key source of information and guidance will be the graduate program/academic department that is hosting you.

For all Incoming Fulbrighters

  • While Fulbright provides health insurance, obtaining SBU health insurance is still highly recommended; refer to Student Health Services or contact studenthealthinsurance@stonybrook.edu for details.
  • Stony Brook doesn't assist with housing, but refer to the Office of Commuter Student Service and Off Campus Living for housing resources.
  • Upon arrival, complete an online intake form for Stony Brook's Visa and Immigration office, with further guidance to be provided by the Graduate School before your arrival date.
  • For Visa & Social Security Number inquiries, contact the relevant third-party organization such as IIE, Laspau, or Amideast, responsible for Fulbright, as Stony Brook's Visa and Immigration office do not have access to your visa information.

For Incoming Fulbrighters enrolling in Master’s or PhD programs
