Emergency Loan Program

The Emergency Loan Program, provides interest-free, short-term loans(up to $2,000) to eligible graduate students. This program is funded by the Provost and administered through the Graduate School , to help aid students during an emergency financial hardship (medical, car, personal, family, etc.). This loan cannot be used to pay routine expenses such as tuition, housing, fees, and books.

Program eligibility

  • Enrolled full time in a graduate degree program (Graduate School).
  • Good academic standing.
  • No other outstanding loans.
  • No outstanding bill with Student Accounts.

 

Procedure

  • The student must first submit a signed application to Graduate School Finance and Administration.
  • Submitted applications are reviewed by the committee for approval.
  • The student is contacted with a decision and, if approved, the student must then complete a promissory note.
  • Once notarized, the original promissory note must be delivered to the Graduate School before payment can be processed.
  • The Stony Brook Foundation (SBF) processes check payments, on average within two-weeks and will be mailed directly to the student’s provided address.

Payback of the loan is due within 90 days and non-payment will result in registration holds on the student's account, late payments fees and/or transcript holds.
