SBU 3MT Rules and Judging

Eligibility Rules

  • Competitors must be doctoral candidates at the Stony Brook University.
  • Students must be advanced to candidacy. 
  • Students' research should be sufficiently advanced for findings to be presented.
  • Students may be in any disciplinary field. 

 

Presentation Rules

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.  Presenters are allowed to finish their final sentence when time is called.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (eg. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are to commence from the stage or, for online competition, from a video screen.
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through speaking their first word.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

 

Judging Criteria

1. Comprehension & Content (10 points)
  • Did you (the judge) understand the significance of the presenter’s thesis to their field, culture, and/or society?
  • Did you understand the approach or method taken by the presenter to address their thesis questions?
  • Did you understand the conclusions, results, and/or findings from the presenter’s thesis?

2. Engagement & Communication (10 points)
  • Did you feel the presenter captured and maintained your attention?
  • Did you feel the language used was appropriate for a non-specialist audience?
  • Did you feel the presentation slide enhanced your engagement with the presentation?
