Clinical Instructor - Nurse Practitioner

Required Qualifications

Current NYS RN license. Master's degree in Nursing. NYS license as an adult and/or family nurse practitioner. Three years of experience in the management of breast cancer patients or at least six years of experience treating breast cancer patients as a nurse. Knowledgeable on chemotherapy regiments for treating breast cancer and the associated side effects profile. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional years of related experience. Chemotherapy certified, CBCN certification. ONC certification. Knowledgeable on hormonal therapies and general treatment of breast cancer patients.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Nurse Practitioner will report to Dr. Stopeck in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and be responsible for the following:

  • Independently assess and evaluate new and follow up breast cancer patients at the outpatient clinic of Stony Brook Cancer Center
  • Perform physical exams and procedures related to patient participation on clinical trials
  • Present, discuss, and consent patients to appropriate clinical trials
  • Review, evaluate, and make recommendations regarding laboratory findings for patients
  • Manage complications of chemotherapy including writing chemotherapy orders
  • Manage outpatient phone calls including toxicity assessments and recommendations
  • Follow-up with patients regarding laboratory and radiology tests by telephone or in person
  • Provide coverage and management for sick walk-ins
  • Provide coverage for patients with other cancers as necessary
  • Educate patients and family members regarding breast cancer management and treatment
  • Rotate through established "call" schedule for Physician extenders in the clinic regarding infusion reactions
  • Assist in transition of care planning
  • Provide survivorship and long-term follow-up for breast cancer patients
  • Initiate or participate in the research mission of the breast cancer program
  • Demonstrate skills in collaboration, teamwork and problem solving to achieve goals
  • Knowledge of basic software packages and hospital information systems (EMR)
  • Additional responsibilities may also be requires as the position evolves over time including clinical oversight of infusion area

Special Notes

This is a non-tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
