Associate Professor/Professor - Associate Dean for Research

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a health sciences or related field.
  • Leadership in establishing ongoing programs of research who is currently funded with the documented ability to attract and sustain extramural funding.
  • Track record of NIH funding or federal funding.
  • Broad knowledge of the issues related to academic research with at least 5 years' experience in academic research.
  • Experience in research design didactic and clinical methodology.
  • Experience in the development, implementation, evaluation and monitoring of a research program.
  • Experience in working with research teams and supervising the work of others in the research setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership role in implementing systems and technology to support teams.
  • Experience in working with senior administration, university administration and governing boards for research organizations.
  • Experience in leadership in professional organizations dedicated to research and research education.

Responsibilities & Requirements

Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (SDM) seeks a recognized academic leader with a well-established and funded program of research to advance its strategic vision and mission as Associate Dean for Research. The senior faculty member will be charged with leading and overseeing the ongoing development of the SDM's research, including identifying new areas of research, mentoring early-career and mid-career faculty, and pursuing research funding opportunities.

They will be expected to:

  • Implement and assess a strategic framework for the SDM Office for Research.
  • Provide leadership for implementation, assessment, and evaluation of SDM research programs.
  • Be innovative and collaborative and capable of bringing leadership to the research enterprise of the SDM by supporting team science and entrepreneurial endeavors.
  • Facilitate a supportive and inclusive research environment that develops strong and supportive relationships with research leaders, faculty, staff and students.
  • Provide oversight related to grant & contracts submissions, post award grants management, and human subjects research guidance, and the Annual SDM Research Day.
  • Work with the SDM administration, as well as the research administration of Health Sciences and University, to facilitate and sustain optimal research facilities and an environment that supports research and education for generating new knowledge in the basic, applied and clinical sciences, as well as in the areas of health services, health policy, and health education.
  • Chair an SDM Research Committee that assesses outcome measure date in support of research best practices.
  • Support the communication of SDM research to our science communities including the management of the Annual SDM Student Research Day.
  • Implement research policies and ensure compliance aligned with Stony Brook University.
  • Ensure alignment with CODA research accreditation standards.
  • Participate in teaching roles and practices consistent with the area of expertise.

Special Notes

This is a tenure track position.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.  Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: As soon as possible.
