Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Geosciences or closely related field. Demonstrated potential to establish a high-level research program in the field of geochronology. Clear interest in carrying out research and teaching at Turkana Basin Institute (TBI). Candidates need not, at present, have a research program in the Turkana Basin.

Preferred Qualifications

Post-doctoral and/or other post-Ph.D. related professional experience, creativity and quality of relevant research program to date, demonstrated fundability of research, experience with and demonstrated expertise in geochronology, potential for collaboration within the department to advance its research mission, potential for collaboration with TBI and related research groups, demonstrated potential as an educator/mentor at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Responsibilities & Requirements

The Department of Geosciences at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor Faculty position in the field of Geochronology, one of five Presidential TBI faculty lines being created across campus, for researchers whose interests intersect with the goals and resources of the Turkana Basin Institute. We seek a candidate with the potential to augment or build upon the Department’s current research strengths across the geosciences and related sciences on campus while taking advantage of Stony Brook’s unique relationship with the Turkana Basin Institute, located in a premier site for the study of hominid and vertebrate evolution during the Cenozoic. We seek a candidate who will be an effective teacher in undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of geochronology and stratigraphy, and will develop programs that will enhance the department’s tradition of interdisciplinary research. The Assistant Professor will be responsible for teaching, research, mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students, and administrative duties.

Special Notes

This is a tenure track position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2019.
