Norma Egic

Norma Egic has been a special education teacher for over 23 years. She earned a master's degree in Special Education and Reading from Dowling College and a Bachelor of Social Work degree from the State University of New York at Albany. She holds a Wilson Reading Academy certification in Levels 1-6 and is qualified to teach groups. Ms. Egic is also trained in the University of Kansas Strategic Instruction Model, including Sentence Writing, Paragraph Writing, Essay Writing, The Concept Comparison Routine, and Vocabulary.

Ms. Egic's work with youth extends beyond education, including counseling adolescents at New Alternatives and Door of Hope in San Diego, California; conducting intakes and referring heroin addicts to programming at the C Street Methadone Clinic, in San Diego, California; and empowering girls as a Suffolk County, New York, Girl Scout leader for over 5 years. She is driven by a commitment to ensure young people have a caring, safe environment in order to achieve their goals. Ms. Egic has worked in the fields of business and social work.

Ms. Egic has been instrumental in developing and presenting programs for the Special Education Department in the Sachem School District. She developed a "School Store Model", where students practiced retail store skills, with the goal of providing employment experiences for those transitioning after graduation. From 2002 -2004, Ms. Egic was a turnkey presenter for "Preparing Student with Disabilities for the 11th grade ELA regents." Ms. Egic has served on committees in the Sachem School District to develop curriculum for special education students, write goals for Individual Education Plans, and explore the feasibility of bringing the Integrated/Collaborative model of teaching to her school district. She has served as a teacher mentor for the New York State Teacher Intern Program and student mentor for the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island. In 2003, Ms. Egic was honored with the Women of Substance, Lindenhurst, NY award for Excellence in Academia in Special Education

Ms. Egic joined Stony Brook University in 2008 and has taught Principles and Practices of Special Education and Multimedia Classroom. She has also taught on-line classes in Special Education, and Nutrition at Dowling College, Touro College, and the College of New Rochelle.
