Updates on BIO Course Offerings

  • There are a few course offering changes for the Spring 2017 semester.   BIO 311 will not be offered this spring semester, instead BIO 365 (Biochemistry Lab) will be offered.  Two additional upper division BIO labs: BIO 341 (Plant Diversity) and BIO 367 (Molecular Diversity) will be offered this semester , in addition to our regularly scheduled spring BIO labs.
  • To enroll in BIO 327 (Developmental Genetics Lab) or BIO 365 (Biochemistry Lab), students MUST contact Lynette Giordano ( Lynette.Giordano@stonybrook.edu).  Priority placement in these courses will be for students who require these courses for graduation.
  • The foundational BIO lecture courses: BIO 201, BIO 202, and BIO 203 are now all being offered Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters.  BIO 203 will only be offered as a hybrid course for the Spring and Summer semesters.
  • The Biology department will be offering a section of CAR 210 for the first time this spring semester (Section 2, Class # 70172). This section of the course is designed for U2, U3, or U4 standing BIO, BCH, BCP and other Life Sciences majors who wish to explore career fields and internship opportunities.  The course will address different career paths in the Life Sciences, the career decision process, and how to prepare for the workforce through use of online resources, an alumni panel, informational interviews, and attendance of a job fair.  This section requires department consent; to register please email Kira Schultheiss ( Kira.Schultheiss@stonybrook.edu) for permission.
  • BIO 266 will be offered Winter 2017 semester.  Please read the FAQ's about BIO 266 (not for BIO major credit)

If this is the third or more attempt, an appointment must be made online at http://bio.advising.stonybrook.edu to see an advisor as a petition process is necessary.  Make sure to check the Academic and Transfer Services page for the  up-to-date course retake policy

Biology Course Registration Issues - See Lynette Giordano
If you have any problems registering for BIO courses, then make sure to contact Lynette Giordano immediately (location 110 CMM/BLL - email  lynette.giordano@stonybrook.edu - phone 631-632-8530). Some of our courses (i.e., BIO 201, BIO 202, BIO 205, BIO 207, BIO 315, BIO 358) may have reserved seats. Some courses (e.g., BIO 475, 476, 486, 487, 488, 489) will require departmental permission. Ms. Giordano can assist you with any such issues.

What should you do if a given BIO course has no seats available for you? If the course has a SOLAR waitlist then please make sure to place yourself on that. If the course does not have such a waitlist or if you have other BIO registration concerns, then please contact Lynette Giordano right away (110 CMM/BLL,  lynette.giordano@stonybrook.edu, 631-632-8530).

Course Offerings by Semester
You may want to see the history of Biology Major/Minor course offerings over the last several years. If you are considering postponing a course until next year, then this file may suggest when it will be offered again. You should always double check with a Biology Advisor.

Declaration of Specialization
All Biology majors must officially declare a specialization before graduation. As noted above, registration in some courses can depend on your declared specialization.   The Registrar will be accepting major/specialization forms again between October 31st, 2016 and January 13th, 2017.   Students may stop by the Undergraduate Biology program office after that date to fill out a major declaration form.   Major/specialization changes at that time will be effective for the Spring 2017 semester.

BIO Advising Appointments :
BIO advising appointments can be made at http://bio.advising.stonybrook.edu.  For general education requirements, please see an advisor in Academic and Transfer Advising Services, or your freshman or EOP advisor.
