Dorsky Museum appoints Sophie Landres, Ph.D., as new Curator and Exhibitions Manager
Sophie Landres has been appointed as the new curator and exhibitions manager for SUNY New Paltz's Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art. With an extensive background in postwar intermedia and contemporary art, Landres is a curator, art historian, educator, and arts writer. She holds a Ph.D. in art history and criticism from Stony Brook University, an MFA in Art Criticism and Writing from The School of Visual Arts, and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Iowa.
Landres has previously held roles in various museums and arts organizations, including the Museum of Art and Design in Miami, Art in General in Brooklyn, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. She has curated numerous exhibitions, showcasing artists such as Shimon Attie, Tauba Auerbach, and Kite (Dr. Suzanne Kite).
Her vision for The Dorsky Museum includes programming that supports creative risks, engages with both local and global issues, and encourages critical thinking. Landres is excited to collaborate with colleagues to create meaningful and compelling experiences for visitors through exhibitions, discursive events, and publications. Her writing has been featured in peer-reviewed journals and art publications, further emphasizing her expertise in the art world.
