Barbara Frank Honored at Arts Council for African Studies Association Triennial
Congratulations to Barbara Frank, professor in the Department of Art, whose book,
Griot Potters of the Folona: The History of an African Ceramic Tradition (Indiana,
2021), was among four others honored at this year's Arts Council of the African Studies
Association (ACASA) Triennial with The Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award,
one of the field’s top prizes.
In a congratulatory letter, the ACASA described Barbara's "methodological innovation
– using a “chaine operatoire” of potting to trace migration and marriage patterns
– is a remarkably creative solution to the problem of how we may reconstruct the past
in the absence of textual documentation. Suffice it to say that we were really, really
impressed by this book."
