Dr. George Stefopoulos

George Stefopoulos is a Research and Technology development engineer at the New York Power Authority. He received his Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 2001 and the MS and Ph.D. degrees in the same field from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, USA, in 2002 and 2009 respectively. He worked as a research assistant at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech from 2001 to 2009. He joined the New York Power Authority in July 2009 as an R&TD Engineer. George Stefopoulos is a member of IEEE, an associate member of IET, and a member of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). He is also a licensed professional engineer in Greece.

PMU Data Analysis and Smart Grid Applications

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) are the most prominent devices for smart grid applications when it comes to the bulk part of the electric power system. Their ability to provide accurate, fast, and globally valid phasor computations throughout widespread areas can revolutionize the way the electric transmission grid is monitored and controlled. This presentation provides an overview of the synchrophasor network deployed and operated by the New York Power Authority since the early 90s. NYPA currently operates nine PMUs in its network and the collected data are currently being used in a number of R&D-type applications. Expansion plans are in place for new units to be integrated in the existing infrastructure in the next three years along with additional wide-area system monitoring applications.
