Travel Signatures

On this page, you will learn what a travel signature is, how to check if it is valid, and how to request a new one before you travel.

What Is A Travel Signature?

A travel signature is a signature from your Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), also called your VIS advisor.

You can find this signature on your Form DS-2019.

This signature confirms that you are maintaining your J-1 status and are eligible to re-enter the United States after traveling outside the country.

You must have a valid travel signature each time you return to the United States, including after short trips to Canada or Mexico.

How To Check If Your Travel Signature Is Valid

You can find your travel signature on your most recent Form DS-2019.

Check the date next to the advisor’s signature.

  • For enrolled J-1 students, your travel signature is valid for 12 months from the date it was signed

If your travel signature will expire before you return to the United States, you must request a new one before you travel.

Special Situations

New students
If you have a DS-2019 with an initial program start date, your document includes a travel signature. You should still confirm that it will remain valid for your return.

After program updates
If you receive a new DS-2019 (for example, after a program extension or Academic Training approval), review the document to confirm your travel signature is still valid.

How To Request A New Travel Signature

Plan ahead. You should request a new travel signature at least 5–7 business days before your departure.

To request a travel signature:

  • Submit the Travel Signature Request request through accessVIS
  • Your VIS advisor will review your request and confirm your eligibility

If approved, you will receive an updated Form DS-2019 with a new travel signature.

Electronic DS-2019 forms are accepted by the U.S. government. You do not need a printed original with an ink signature.
