Prescribed Course of Study

You may be eligible to extend your J-1 program for a summer research opportunity if the activity meets the “prescribed course of study” requirement. To maintain your J-1 status, you must be engaged full time in a structured academic program with a clear educational objective.

A prescribed course of study means you are participating in a defined, non-degree academic program. This may include intensive English language training, research, coursework, and/or academic training. During the summer, your research activity must be formally connected to your academic program and meet full-time expectations.

Eligibility

To qualify, you must:

  • Be enrolled in at least 1 academic credit during the summer session
  • Participate in at least 30 hours per week of research or academic activity

Supervisor Letter Requirements

Your supervisor must provide a signed letter confirming that your research is part of a structured academic program. The letter must include:

  • Course name and confirmation of summer registration (minimum 1 credit)
  • Number of hours per week (minimum 30 hours)
  • Supervisor’s name and title
  • Clear research goals
  • Detailed research plan
  • Method of evaluation (how your work will be assessed)
  • Available facilities and equipment supporting your research

Important Considerations

Your extension must directly support your academic objectives and remain consistent with your J-1 program. You cannot begin or continue the research activity until your extension is approved.
