Permanent Residence Sponsorship
Permanent residence, often called a “green card,” allows a foreign national to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis.
Visa and Immigration Services (VIS) serves as the liaison with SUNY-approved immigration
counsel for employment-based permanent residence sponsorship at Stony Brook University.
Eligibility
SBU permanent residence sponsorship is generally limited to:
- Tenure-track faculty positions
- Research positions that are officially designated as permanent
The position must also have the full and unconditional support of the hiring department
and university.
Important Considerations
When SBU sponsorship is required, all petitions must be processed through VIS. In compliance with state law, the University does not authorize outside attorneys to represent its interests other than SUNY-approved immigration counsel.
SBU reserves the right to decline or discontinue sponsorship if the employee or position does not meet the requirements for the selected employment-based category.
Departments that wish to pursue permanent residence sponsorship should contact Visa and Immigration Services to discuss eligibility, timing, and the appropriate process before making commitments to the employee.
